The British Fashion Council announced Monday that all citizens must now own and wear six specific garments each autumn, with the decree taking immediate effect and compliance officers beginning door-to-door wardrobe inspections in Bath and surrounding counties.
«These six pieces are non-negotiable,» said Council chairwoman Margaret Hollingsworth at a press conference held inside a walk-in closet converted into a command center. «We have determined that a timeless autumn wardrobe consists of exactly one trench coat, one chunky knit sweater, one pair of leather boots, one wool blazer, one silk scarf, and one pair of tailored trousers. Citizens found lacking any of these items will be issued a provisional autumn vest and enrolled in a corrective styling seminar.»
The Council has deployed 340 wardrobe inspectors across the United Kingdom, each equipped with measuring tapes, fabric swatches, and laminated cards depicting the approved garments. Residents of Bath reported inspectors knocking on doors at 6 a.m., asking to see the contents of their closets and photographing any item deemed «seasonally ambiguous.»
«I showed them my corduroy jacket and they shook their heads,» said Bath resident Patricia Whitmore. «They told me corduroy was a spring transitional fabric and wrote me up for a violation. I have to attend a seminar on Thursday where they will show me slides of acceptable autumn layering.»
The Council has also announced plans to open six regional garment distribution centers where citizens can purchase the approved items at fixed prices. The centers will operate from September through November, after which the Council will issue its winter decree, rumored to include a specific parka and thermal underlayer combination.
