Brewers Beat Dodgers 7-4 in Game 2, Take 2-0 NLCS Lead

Milwaukee's bullpen threw 5 1/3 perfect innings and the Brewers capitalized on soft-contact hits to beat Los Angeles 7-4 on Monday, putting the Dodgers' three-peat hopes in jeopardy.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 on Monday afternoon in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, taking a 2-0 series lead and pushing the Dodgers' hopes of a third consecutive World Series title to the brink.

Milwaukee's bullpen delivered another dominant performance, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings without allowing a single baserunner — the first time in postseason history a team's relief corps has gone over five innings in a playoff game without surrendering a baserunner. The Brewers' bullpen has now allowed just one run over nearly 29 innings this postseason, a stretch that has reshaped the series.

The Dodgers struck first without recording a hit. Mookie Betts walked, advanced to second on a Freddie Freeman groundout, took third on a wild pitch from starter Logan Henderson, and scored on a Teoscar Hernandez sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Milwaukee answered immediately in the bottom half. Brice Turang doubled after the Dodgers declined to challenge an apparent missed strike-three call, then scored on a bloop single from William Contreras, who reached out with one hand to make contact against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Los Angeles reclaimed the lead in the third when back-to-back singles from Tommy Edman and Betts set up a rally. Sal Frelick robbed Freeman of extra bases with a running catch in the right-center gap, but an error on a pickoff attempt at first base allowed Edman to score. The Dodgers' threat ended with easy outs from Hernandez and Shohei Ohtani. Milwaukee responded in the bottom of the inning. David Hamilton poked a bloop single, stole second, and Turang reached on another missed strike-three call that catcher Will Smith did not challenge. Jake Bauers worked a lengthy walk against Yamamoto, and Christian Yelich singled to center to drive in two runs. Yamamoto lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs.

Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, the Dodgers scored twice without a hit with runners in scoring position. Kyle Tucker led off with a double, then scored when Henderson threw away a Tommy Edman bunt, sending Edman to second. A groundout and a sacrifice fly gave Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. Contreras tied it in the bottom half with a mammoth home run to left-center.

Milwaukee took the lead for good in the sixth. Hamilton was hit by a pitch, advanced on a poor pickoff attempt, moved to third on a Jackson Chourio grounder, and scored on another end-of-the-bat blooper from Contreras. The Brewers added insurance in the eighth when Hamilton crushed a 73 mph single to right, stole second, and scored on a 71 mph single from Turang. Bauers followed with another 73 mph bloop single, pushing Milwaukee to 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Brewers' success with soft contact has been a defining theme of the series. Milwaukee has three hitters in the top seven in batting average on balls in play, or BABIP, despite poor exit velocities. Decades of baseball data show that players and teams with weak hard-hit rates do not sustain above-average BABIP, making Milwaukee's run an outlier that has nonetheless powered them to the cusp of the World Series.

The Dodgers, widely regarded as the sport's superteam, now face a must-win Game 3. Their rotation, which carried them through the 2025 postseason, has been matched by a Milwaukee bullpen assembled at minimal cost. JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe, Trevor Megill, Aaron Ashby and DL Hall have formed a unit that has yet to yield a baserunner in over five innings of a playoff game, a feat no other bullpen in postseason history has accomplished.

For Los Angeles, the margin for error has vanished. The team that entered the series as a heavy favorite must now win four of the next five games against a Milwaukee club that finished with the best record in the league and has played essentially flawless baseball through two games. The Dodgers' three-peat ambitions, once considered likely, are now on life support.
