BMW's new M350 xDrive produces more torque than any F80-generation M3, including the Competition Package variant, marking a significant shift in the hierarchy of the company's performance lineup. The M350's 428 lb-ft exceeds the F80 M3 Competition's 406 lb-ft by 22 lb-ft, a figure that has remained unchanged since BMW introduced the Competition Package nearly a decade ago.
The M350 xDrive generates 437 hp in US specification and 443 PS in Germany — the same output expressed in different units. That comfortably clears the standard F80 M3's 425 hp and sits just seven horsepower shy of the F80 M3 Competition's 444 hp. The torque advantage is more decisive. The S55 engine in the F80 never gained a single pound-foot when BMW bolted on the Competition Package, leaving both variants at 406 lb-ft. The M350's 48V mild hybrid system fills the bottom of the torque curve in a way the older M engine was never designed to do.
The mechanical differences extend beyond raw numbers. The F80 M3, produced between 2014 and 2018, used a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, sending power to the rear wheels alone. The M350 xDrive adopts a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six — the B58 unit, closely related to the engine found in the X3 M50 — combined with a 48V mild hybrid motor and an eight-speed automatic. Power reaches all four wheels through BMW's xDrive system. The M350 is estimated to weigh around 1,800 kg, compared with roughly 1,560 to 1,661 kg for the F80.
This is not the first time the gap between BMW's M Performance models and its full M cars has narrowed unexpectedly. The M340i, with its 382 hp, came within striking distance of the E46 M3's 333 hp from a full engine generation earlier. The M240i performed a similar trick against the E46 M3's smaller stablemate. Each time, the discrepancy was dismissed as a one-generation anomaly that would correct itself once the next M car arrived with more power. And each time, it did correct — but only because the M division kept escalating, moving from the S55 to the S58 engine and pushing the current M3 Competition beyond 500 hp.
For buyers, the M350's advantage is straightforward. It offers most of an M3's straight-line performance, superior everyday comfort, all-wheel drive for poor weather conditions, and a lower price, without the ownership demands of a car engineered primarily for track use. The M350 will not unsettle its driver on a wet road the way a rear-wheel-drive M3 can. For the overwhelming majority of customers who will never attend a track day, that trade-off is plainly sensible.
The complication lies in what this means for the cars above it. If an M Performance model can match or beat a decade-old M3 on paper, the full M car must justify its existence through other means — and recently that has meant more power, more weight, more complexity, and a higher price. The G80 M3 is a substantially larger car than the E46 it claims descent from, and part of the reason is that BMW cannot allow the M badge to mean merely «quick» when the M Performance range already covers that territory. M must signify something more extreme, which pushes the flagship further from the lightweight, direct character that defined much of its own history.
The M350's torque advantage is not the result of a deliberate decision to turn M Performance cars into secret M cars. It stems from turbocharging and mild hybridization becoming cheap and effective enough that large torque figures no longer require a dedicated engine programme. The B58's extra shove comes from an electric motor performing a task BMW once solved with greater displacement and boost pressure. This is simply what modern powertrains do, regardless of whether the car wearing them carries a full M badge.
