JLR has unveiled the Range Rover Sport Electric, an all-wheel-drive SUV that matches the acceleration of the supercharged V8 version while running on battery power alone. The new model produces 542 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque from a pair of electric motors, reaching 62 mph in 4.5 seconds with Dynamic Launch Control engaged — the same figure as the eight-cylinder Range Rover Sport.
The Sport Electric arrives less than a month after JLR revealed the full-size Range Rover Electric, and it borrows much of its technology from that larger sibling. It is built on an updated version of the company's Modular Longitudinal Architecture Flex platform with an 800-volt electrical system. A 118.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides a driving range of up to 373 miles, or 600 kilometers, on a full charge.
Charging performance is a central selling point. The SUV supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kilowatts, allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 22 minutes. Ten minutes at a fast charger adds up to 137 miles of range. The battery is smaller in capacity terms than what a plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport offers, but the electric model delivers a longer all-electric driving distance.
Visually, the Sport Electric is nearly indistinguishable from the combustion-powered model on sale today. The differences are limited to a slightly more aerodynamic grille and unique alloy wheels, along with the absence of exhaust outlets. Range Rover engineers have also developed a special soundscape for the model, which the company says «blurs the lines between music and engineering.»
Off-road capability has been preserved. The SUV comes with the latest version of the company's Intelligent Traction Management system, Dynamic Air Suspension, Active Roll Control, twin valve dampers and an adaptive dynamics system that monitors 100 parameters 500 times per second. All-wheel steering is standard, and the vehicle can wade through up to 35.4 inches of water and climb 45-degree inclines. Range Rover tested the model at open-air Carrara marble quarries in Italy, where it handled slippery surfaces and steep grades.
Compared with the current plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, the Electric model's body structure is 61 percent stiffer and its center of gravity sits 2.8 inches lower. Those changes are intended to sharpen handling and reduce body roll and pitch.
«Range Rover Sport is the most dynamic expression of Range Rover,» said Martin Limpert, the firm's managing director. «With Range Rover Sport Electric we're taking that spirit of visceral engagement and desire into the electric age. It is first and foremost a Range Rover Sport.» He added that the integrated electric propulsion system unlocks new levels of responsiveness and precision through a uniquely tuned chassis, performance-focused torque delivery and distinctive sound profiles.
The Range Rover Sport Electric will be offered in Dynamic HSE and Autobiography trims. The Autobiography version gives buyers access to Range Rover's Bespoke commissioning service, which allows extensive customization. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in select markets in the first quarter of 2027.
American buyers will not be among the first recipients. JLR has confirmed that the electric Range Rover Sport will not be available for the 2027 model year in the United States, leaving the combustion and plug-in hybrid versions to carry the model line in that market for now. The decision means US customers seeking an electric Range Rover Sport will face a longer wait than buyers in the initial launch markets.
